Slovo site evictions to start on Monday

Joe Slovo dwellers have indicated that they will not move to a temporary housing site in Delft

The relocation of more than 4 000 informal dwellers from Joe Slovo in Langa will begin as early as next Monday.

This is if the dwellers do not appeal today's Cape High court ruling that orders them to make way for Phase Two of the N2 Gateway Project. The dwellers have however indicated that they will not move to a temporary housing site in Delft.

In terms of today's judgment, the relocation process will span over 45 weeks, with the last group of dwellers relocating in mid-January next year.

Judge president John Hlophe ruled that the relocation was in no way an attempt by the government to re-enact apartheid forced removals. He said it was rather an intention to comply with the constitution by providing adequate housing. - SABC
