Raging fires in Western Cape, six houses gutted

Firefighters try to put out the blaze

The fire has been raging on for hours

Five houses have been gutted in Betty's Bay and one in Hawston by a veld fire fanned by a strong northwesterly wind in the Overberg region of the Western Cape.

Firefighter Raymond Stemela says as a result the R-43 between Gansbaai and Hawston has been closed. He says the fire that started at Hawston is now approaching a yacht club and chicken farms along the R43.

Stemela says people are still trying to put out the fire which has been raging on for hours.
