Khayelitsha residents up in arms

Informal settlement dwellers used burning tyres, rubbish and a shipping container to blockade a major road on four consecutive days this week to protest against poor service delivery in Cape Town.

Angry Khayelitsha residents caused traffic jams and temporarily closed one of the city’s busiest thoroughfares, Lansdowne Road.

Fed up with having to live without running water, proper toilets and electricity, they vented their frustration against an ANC ward councillor.

The protest is a taste of the mass action the Democratic Alliance-run provincial government is likely to face in coming months.

Community leader Thandabantu Mgoduka said the protest was sparked by a rumour that residents would be left out of the city’s electrification plans — and continue to live in the dark under a DA-run city and province.

Mgoduka said they did not receive answers, even when they approached their local councillor, Nontsomi Billie.

Police spokesman Constable Mthokozisi Gama said the protest turned violent and the police intervened.

Golden Arrow buses were attacked during the mass action. Gama said the police couldn’t confirm how many people were injured. — The Times
