Fire consumes community as 20 shacks gutted

About 80 residents lost their homes when a fire swept through their suburb.

Twenty shacks were destroyed in the fire late on Friday in Masiphumelele.

No one was hurt.

Fire and Rescue services sent out three fire tenders and one water tanker and brought the fire under control within an hour. Disaster Risk Management officials were also at the scene and provided relief.

Disaster Risk Management spokesperson, Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said officials offered alternative shelter to residents but they decided to stay with family and friends in the area.

Residents were given blankets and food parcels.
