DA welcomes open toilet task team

The Democratic Alliance has welcomed the announcement of a sanitation task team to investigate the country's open toilet mess.

“We hope that (the development) indicates a new willingness to go beyond politics in the interests of those who struggle with substandard sanitation,” DA spokesperson Butch Steyn said in a statement on Wednesday.

Steyn said to assist the team, he had sent his party's report identifying communities with sanitation problems in some provinces.

The report was previously submitted to the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in June 2010.

“The SAHRC declined to investigate on the basis that it could be beyond the capacity of the commission to mount an investigation on this scale,” said Steyn.

Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale announced the sanitation team on Tuesday, to be headed by ANC stalwart Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. The team had been tasked with identifying irregularities and malpractice, the scale of the problem, its nature and geographic extent. It had three months to complete its work, said Sexwale.
