Protesters demand house keys

Pelican Park backyarders are fuming after human settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela failed to give them keys to houses they claim they were given title deeds to.

The 59 backyarders yesterday marched to the department’s offices in Wale Street to demand Madikizela give them their keys so they can move into their houses.

They claimed Madikizela agreed in March to give them the keys but he now appeared to have changed his mind.

The group’s spokesperson, Faheema Sabera, said they attended a meeting at the Mama Housing Project site two months ago where they were each given stand numbers.

However, she said they were later told by department officials that not all 59 would receive houses as some did not qualify for low-cost housing.

She said the officials told them their names had been screened only after the stand numbers had been given out.

Sabera said the 59 houses completed in the first phase of the 370-unit project were standing empty and being vandalised.

“We want those houses because they were built for us. We refuse to be treated like fools,” said another protester, Eraphaan Hendricks.

While Madikizela insists that all the correct procedures were followed, he told the group he would ask department officials to look into the matter and report back to him.
