Three die in CT shack fires

CAPE TOWN – Three people have died in two separate shack fires over the long weekend, Cape Town Disaster Management officials revealed on Monday.

A couple was killed in a blaze in an informal settlement near Eerste River on Sunday, while a woman died in a shack fire in Philippi on Friday.

Two children were also hurt in that blaze and were treated at the Red Cross Children's Hospital in Cape Town.
Disaster Management Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the fires were caused by overturned candles or negligence.

“At least 50 people were left homeless across the city.”

According to statistics, the Western Cape has recorded the highest number of shack fires in the past year.
