There are fears that hundreds of visitors from other provinces could have been in contact with the more than 20 Tuberculosis patients who escaped from a Port Elizabeth hospital last month.
The Health Department in the Eastern Cape has now urged anyone who has been in contact with the patients to visit their nearest TB clinic for a screening. About 26 XDR and MDR-TB patients who walked out of Jose Pearson Hospital are still roaming the streets. Twenty-three have returned and the department has obtained a court order to facilitate their return.
Health spokesperson Siyanda Manana says a process has been put in place for the screening of all affected people. Manana has called on relatives to persuade them to return to the centre to complete their treatment. They left the hospital to spend the festive period with their families.
