Western Cape Human Settlements MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela on Sunday said housing projects built and managed by the defunct Thubelisha Homes are a "nightmare" for his department.
He says most of the projects have problems with allocations and they are also not satisfied with the condition of the units.
The MEC met with residents of Mandela Park in Khayelitsha on Sunday.
The residents are unhappy with the progress of two housing projects started by Thubelisha in the area.
They also claim the allocation of the completed units was marred by corruption. Madikizela, however, says he is doing all he can to deal with the matter.
“There are two projects in Mandela Park; it’s 497 and 823, these are old projects. We are now trying to speed up the process to just finalise these projects and close this chapter once and for all.”
One resident said he was fed up with the situation.
“There’s plenty of land there to build shacks. We’ll have to build shacks because this process will take 100 years. We are going to put shacks in those vacant land whether he [the MEC] likes it or not.”
