The ANC in the Western Cape on Thursday said formal housing is the most effective way to stop deadly shack fires.
Party leaders in the province visited the relatives of six people killed when their shack was gutted by a fire last Sunday. Four of the dead were children.
The cause of the blaze was still unknown.
The ANC’s Mcebisi Skwatsha said they wanted to see the family.
“We felt that when our people are under such difficulty we have to feel the pain with them. We came to say to the family we are with them in this hour of need,” said Skwatsha.
He said service delivery must be prioritised.
“As long as people live in such conditions we are bound to have these unfortunate situations."
