CAPE TOWN — The Democratic Alliance (DA) yesterday called on Public Works Minister Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde to re-evaluate her department’s decision to spend millions on new mansions for government ministers.
DA public works spokesman John Steenhuisen said the party would not rest until "we have put a stop to the excessive spending on ministerial luxuries that do not benefit the poor".
Ms Mahlangu-Nkabinde revealed last week that taxpayers had forked out about R183m for new VIP homes for ministers in President Jacob Zuma ’s extended Cabinet. Six new Cabinet positions were created in May 2009 and 17 deputy ministers appointed in October last year to ensure "maximum performance".
Mr Steenhuisen, who was speaking outside the official Cape Town residence built for Deputy Speaker Nomaindia Mfeketo, said the government should, at the very least, reverse the decision to buy secondary residences for ministers to stay in when they are in Cape Town.
"We are standing today outside the official Cape Town residence built for deputy speaker Nomaindia Mfeketo. It has an air- conditioned bedroom, a designer kitchen, an outdoor entertainment area with pool, a terraced garden and six garages."
The house was custom-built for the deputy speaker, reportedly at a cost of R8m.
