Eighteen people were displaced at Netreg, in Bonteheuwel, when a fire destroyed two informal dwellings yesterday, Cape Town disaster risk management said.
Spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the fire was started by the illegal burning of copper wire.
"According to occupants, it is alleged that the people were making an open flame fire by burning copper wire at 11.35am yesterday," he said.
"The fire spread and affected another two backyard dwellings".
No injuries were reported, but the occupants lost all their personal belongings, said Solomons-Johannes.
