It's been two weeks of wading through water - even inside their own homes - for a group of Phillipi residents who aren't impressed that through it all they have yet to see a city official arrive to offer them aid.
"We are basically living the lives of a fish; we're living in water," said Lizo Sonamzi, who could not get in and purify his home without gumboots and a rain suit last saturday because the water came right up to his doorstep.
"The rain just came down harder and harder. It just kept coming in through my door and I spent much of last Saturday evening sweeping water out the house," hi said, adding that his house was still wet a week later.
Last Sunday community leader Lindikhaya Galeni contracted the weekend Argus to report that some residents of Block 6 in Phillipi had not received any assistance from city authorities, despite his having called in to the city's call centre.
Around 5:40pm last Sunday, weekend Argus also alerted a city official, who contacted the disaster risk management centre only to be told they were on their way to Phillipi.
"But Galeni said when he called the centre, they couldn't tell me whether that were coming, let alone when".
He was then told by a disaster risk management official that they would only get help on Monday, "because we had made the call too late".
"we are still waiting," Galeni said yesterday.
Although there was some sunshine yesterday, the homes of residents in the area were still wet. And now they complain the city doesn't care about them. Not only is all their food wet and destroyed by the rains, but they've also had serious electricity interruptions...
