CAPE TOWN - A man has died and eight others have been left homeless after two shacks caught alight in Khayelitsha.
Cape Town's Disaster Risk Management's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the shacks caught alight just after midnight.
“The circumstances aren’t clear at this stage. However, the City of Cape Town has launched an investigation into the incident.”
He said disaster teams would visit those affected today to render the necessary relief aid.
Meanwhile, a mother and her four-year-old son died at the weekend after a fire gutted their informal dwelling in Parkwood.
Veronica Abrahams and her son Reidewaan Slingers were killed in the blaze on Sunday morning.
In another incident, a three-year-old girl died in a shack fire in Mfuleni on Saturday morning. The fire left five people homeless.
A number of people have been killed this winter by shack fires in the Western Cape and several residents in Atlantis, Khayelitsha, Durbanville and Langa left homeless.
