Zille to meet Zuma about housing

Western Cape Premier Helen Zille is set to meet with President Jacob Zuma sometime this month to discuss some of the housing problems in the province.

The premier handed over 33 flats to some Masiphumelele residents on Tuesday.

The flats form part of the Amakhaya Ngoku Housing Development, which is expected to accommodate about 350 families when completed.

“The life there in the shack was very very bad. The fire burnt down my stuff four times,” said one woman.

She is one of the first people to receive keys for new apartments.

The provincial housing backlog is close to half a million.

Zille acknowledged housing is one of the biggest challenges facing her administration.

She said she will be discussing this with Zuma soon.

“He has asked me to give him a paper on all of the laws that hinder development and that is what we’ll be doing," said Zille.

Officials said about 17,000 people migrate to the province annually, exacerbating the housing crisis.
