Two dead, 55 homeless in Cape Town fires

Two people, including a minor, were killed and 55 were left homeless after fires broke out in Du Noon and Khayelitsha early Saturday morning, the City of Cape Town said.

“In the first fire that broke out at 1.53am at Site five, Du Noon, near Table View, the blaze destroyed eight shacks leaving 30

people homeless,” spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said in a statement.

“The fire caused the death of a male minor.”

The second fire broke out at 4.20am. It gutted nine shacks and displaced 25 people at QQ Section, Mew Way, and Khayelitsha.

“One adult male was burnt beyond recognition. His identity is unknown.”

The City’s disaster response teams would assist those affected by the fires with food parcels, clothing, blankets and building material.

“The cause of these fires is unknown and the authorities will probe an investigation,” Solomons-Johannes said. - Sapa
