Housing is out of control:

There is no doubt it is time the authorities put their foot down to stop the large-scale illegal buying of government land

It is not clear why the demolished houses were built and services were provided in the first place.

It transpires that the fraudulent land sales have been going on since 2006.

Were the authorities sleeping, and how was it possible that electricity and water were provided?

It seems there is a total lack of control in many government, provincial and metro entities.

Why has only one person been arrested?

We can feel sorry for the people who bought without knowing it was fraudulent.

Their houses should not be demolished.

In view of the dire housing shortage, it is not wise for the authorities to render so many people homeless.

Surely a more ingenious way could have been found, and the government could have handed out fines and made the homeowners pay for the land and services?

The crooks in the housing department should be exposed and arrested.

It seems very much that the partially innocent bear most of the brunt and the culprits in housing administration and water affairs get away.

On the other hand, if some people thought that by declaring that they were ANC supporters they could get away with wrongdoing - being aware that the properties were illegally sold to them - their houses must be bulldozed as a lesson to others.

The whole affair should teach the department that the slow process of providing houses is a bad idea.

Many home-seekers are capable of and willing to build their own houses.

Maybe a solution would be if the authorities provided serviced stands at an accelerated pace and concentrated on controlling the building of houses, and not on creating a population of freebie-seekers.
