The Western Cape housing department says it is considering passing new legislation, aimed at relocating informal settlers.
The law will try to prevent families from returning to areas they’ve been relocated from.
The provincial housing department says the legislation cannot be promulgated until intensive consultations have been completed.
The department's Vusi Tshose says people opposed to the law have had 2 months to make submissions.
But the Anti-Eviction Campaign has likened the move to the Zimbabwe government's controversial urban clean up program “Operation Murambatsvina”, which left thousands of people destitute.
The Kwazulu-Natal government has already taken steps to implement the law.
It’s also offered to assist the Western Cape and Gauteng in formulating similar measures. - 567 Cape Talk
