Living in a home in Cape Town's N2 Gateway Project is like living in a shack. It is icy in winter, and in summer foul odours ooze from the open drains into the house.
There are cracks, mould, flimsy doors and defective fittings. The toilet seat shatters when a resident sits on it.
This is what life is like for Irene, and Lennox Steven who live in Joe Slovo Phase 1 of the project.
The couple and their daughter lived in her mother's back yard in Langa on the Cape Flats for years.
At the age of 50, they moved into their home in 2006.
"Oh, it was very exciting for us," said Irene who lives with her unemployed husband.
They had understood that the rent would be between R150 and R350. When they were handed their keys they were hit with the bad news.
"They wanted R750 and another R800 for water," she said.
They were still happy that they have a roof over their heads but conditions were trying in winter, she said.
"It's like living in a shack. I am always sick in winter - coughing all the time."
Her neighbour Mandisa Mhlabane, 25, said there were five people living in their one-bedroom home. "The smell is really bad in summer. They didn't close the drains where the geysers are. The smell comes into the house."
