It could cost government up to R2 billion to repair badly built houses for the poor, Human Settlements Minister Tokyo Sexwale said on Monday.
In a written parliamentary reply, Sexwale gave a breakdown of how much his department hase paid and what it was planning to spend on rectifying defects.
The Human Settlements Department has had to fix close to 134,000 poorly constructed homes in the country.
Most of the homes are in Gauteng where R528 million was spent on fixing poor workmanship.
Apart from the R1.2 billion already spent on housing defects, a further R722 million is to be set aside to both demolish and rebuild homes or correct flaws.
Earlier this year, Sexwale indicated government would sue developers or contractors which built inferior houses.
