Cape Town is on high alert after weather warnings were issued for the weekend, the city's disaster risk management centre said on Friday.
Weather SA said a cold front from the west of the city had strengthened and grown into a larger, lower frontal system.
Spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said the forecast indicated heavy rainfall on Saturday, peaking on Sunday.
He said persistent high rainfall was expected next week across the Cape Peninsula, associated with north-westerly winds reaching 60km/h.
Localised flooding was expected.
Residents were urged to dial 107 from a landline or 021-480-7700 from a cellphone in cases of emergency. - Sapa
