‘Minister, we are gatvol’

Cape Town - Residents in Eerste Rivier, Blue Downs and surrounding areas have set up an organisation to represent their housing concerns.

The Gatvol Crisis Committee, launched at Amsterdam Farm in Mfuleni, adjacent to the Nuwe Begin housing estate, on Monday, was also formed to give residents a unified voice.

Raymond Mtati, who facilitated the launch, said this was so the MEC for Housing and Human Settlements, Bonginkosi Madikizela, could no longer cite “disparate voices” and “infighting” among residents as reasons for not listening to residents’ concerns.

The residents’ main grievance is that the department’s housing list is incomplete and out of date.

The department uses the city’s list of eligible beneficiaries.

Mtati proposes that Madikizela allow the committee to draw up a new and independent list.

Madikizela’s spokesman, Bruce Oom, said that calls made earlier this year for residents to suggest alternative strategies for compiling a list had not drawn suggestions. The department would be happy to engage with the committee, he added.
