One dead in Cape Town fires

Cape Town - One person died and at least 150 shacks were destroyed in Cape Town fires on Saturday morning, a city official.

Disaster risk centre spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said a person died just after midnight when a backyard dwelling caught fire in Robinvale, Atlantis.

Three hours later, a fire started in Valhalla Park, destroying between 150 and 200 shacks. The cause of the fire was unknown.

A third fire was recorded on Friday night, in which one backyard dwelling was destroyed. No casualties were reported.

The city was providing food parcels, building material and other support to those affected. - Sapa
