CAPE TOWN – The City of Cape Town’s disaster risk management said on Tuesday at least 4, 000 people were left homeless in two separate shack fires in the Western Cape.
The fires took place in the Du Noon and Khayelitsha informal settlements.
Three people died and another person was severely injured in a blaze which gutted about 800 hundred shacks in Du Noon on Tuesday morning while in another incident 120 informal dwellings burnt to the ground in Khayelitsha late on Monday evening.
Firefighters spent hours trying to get the Khayelitsha blaze under control but strong wind conditions hindered their efforts.
Residents watched their entire lives go up in smoke.
One resident said he doesn’t know where he is going to get the money to rebuild his home.
“I have to fix my house and I don’t even know what I am going to do.”
Disaster management’s Wilfred-Solomons Johannes said the fire may have been caused by the negligence of a few residents who were under the influence of alcohol.
