Health Warning Macassar dump fire

The City would like to reassure residents that the fire burning at the Macassar dumping site is being managed by the City’s Fire Services and the area monitored by Health officials.

Residents in the area will however experience smoke and strong odours as the raw, dried sewage is doused and separated in an effort to reach the seat of the fire. This will continue especially if the low wind conditions prevail.

The fire began when a pocket of methane gas at the site spontaneously ignited due to a heat build-up which naturally occurs during the drying process. As the seat of the fire is located underground, it could take the fire and rescue team several days to fully extinguish the blaze. Unfortunately, at this point, the City cannot be more specific with regard to the timeframe.

“Officials are on site to monitor the situation. The City apologises for any discomfort or inconvenience caused.” said Councillor John Heuwel, Ward Councillor for the area.

If residents experience any sustained discomfort they should please visit their local clinic.
