WC shack fires leave hundreds destitute

At least 800 people have been displaced in two shack fires in informal settlements in the Cape Peninsula.

Cape Town Fire Department spokesperson, Liesl Moodie says there were no injuries or fatalities reported in both incidents.

Strong wind has fanned both blazes and hampered rescue efforts. In the first incident in Khayelitsha's W Section, around 120 huts were gutted leaving about 400 people destitute. Moodie says the same number of dwellers were also affected by a blaze near Milnerton.

This morning just before 3am there was a call in Du Noon where 80-100 wood and iron structures were damaged by fire, leaving 400 people displaced.

"Firefighters and emergency vehicles have been dispatched to another shack fire in Khayelitsha's B-M Section a short while ago. No further details are available at this stage", says Moodie
