Baby dies in Wendy house blaze

Cape Town - An eight-month-old girl died in a fire in a Wendy house in Bonteheuwel, the City of the Cape Town said on Friday.

The fire broke out after 10pm on Thursday night, the city's disaster risk management centre spokesman Wilfred Solomons-Johannes said.

“Kauthar Abrahams, who was too young to react by escaping from the devastating blaze, succumbed to her fatal burn wounds,” he said.

The baby's grandmother Aisha Abrahams, 57, tried to rescue her but suffered from smoke inhalation. She was taken to a nearby hospital.

“According to preliminary investigations, it is suspected that the fire was started due to open flames from a lit candle that overturned and ignited the bedding,” Solomons-Johannes said. - Sapa
