CT shack fires claim lives

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Disaster Management says nearly 30 people have been left homeless in separate shack fires in the Cape Peninsula this weekend.

On Sunday morning, four people were displaced when a shack was destroyed in Langa.

This follows a series of shack fires that claimed the lives of a 28-year-old man and an eight-month-old baby.

Disaster management's Wilfred Solomons-Johannes says, “A spate of fires occurred across the Cape Peninsula which resulted in people being displaced.”

Meanwhile, a man is in a serious condition in hospital after he lost control of his vehicle and ploughed into shacks in Khayelitsha.

The accident occurred while the driver swerved his vehicle to avoid hitting children who were trying to cross the road on Saturday.

No one else was injured during the crash.

Solomons-Johannes says, “The driver was then rushed to the Tygerberg Hospital.”

The affected households have since received food parcels, blankets and building materials.
