Shack dwellers lose their belongings in a fire

Two hundred people have been displaced after their shacks caught fire in Gugulethu and Strand in the Western Cape. Most of them lost all their belongings.

The City of Cape Town's Disaster Management authorities say the Gugulethu fire started after midnight on Saturday at the Europa Informal Settlement. The cause is unknown at this stage.

City engineers are still trying to restore power in the area.

The other fire started at the Ethembeni Informal Settlement in Strand. Emergency relief in the form of food parcels, blankets, baby packs, clothing and building material is being provided to the victims.

Three children and a police officer were rushed to a hospital for severe smoke inhalation.

In another incident on Saturday, a house fire broke out in Centurion, Gauteng. Three children and a police officer were rushed to hospital for severe smoke inhalation.

Metro Emergency Services spokesperson Johan Pieterse says that the investigation regarding the cause of the fire is continuing.

“We learned that there were children inside. Fire fighters and one police officer rescued the children. The three children were transported to hospital. All three were classified critical due to smoke inhalation and one of them got slight burn wounds. The police officer was also transported to hospital due to smoke inhalation,” says Pieterse.

Eyewitnesses said that the parents were not home at the time of the incident.
