Matric pupil Thomas Ferreira would have been studying for his next exam today.
Instead, the teenager is fighting for his life after the official vehicle of a Gauteng MEC crashed into his motorcycle at the weekend.
Local government and housing MEC Humphrey Mmemezi was travelling in his official BMW X5 on Saturday morning when the accident happened in Krugersdorp.
Mmemezi was on his way to an "urgent" and "emergency" engagement, Gauteng Premier Nomvula Mokonyane said yesterday. His driver had turned on the vehicle's flashing blue lights.
She did not specify the engagement Mmemezi was rushing to.
He was whisked away from the scene by the VIP protection unit before emergency services workers arrived on the scene. His driver was hospitalised but has been discharged.
Speaking to journalists after visiting the Ferreira family at their home yesterday, Mokonyane refused to answer allegations that the car Mmemezi was travelling in had been speeding.
Ferreira, 18, a pupil of Hoƫrskool Bastion, is in a coma in the intensive care unit of Krugersdorp Hospital.
He has serious brain injuries and had an operation on Monday to relieve pressure on his brain. He is breathing with the help of a ventilator.
"There is still hope for Thomas and that keeps the family going," said Thomas's uncle, Johan Ferreira. "They ask that people pray for their son."
The police are investigating a case of reckless and negligent driving.
