Members of a squatter community near Belhar are elated after they finally received homes.
Some 505 families from Freedom Farm have begun moving into newly built N2 Gateway houses at Delft.
Iris Goliath sits in the doorway of her semi-detached home, watching her two children play in the sandy front yard.
She was on a housing list for nine years and lived in a shack in Freedom Farm for five years.
“We are very happy with our new houses because living in shacks was not good,” she says.
She says she was glad when she heard she was getting a house because it was cold in the shack.
“Life was hard before and now things have definitely improved.”
The new home owners will be getting prepaid electricity boxes and will be expected to pay their rates bills.
Although Iris is unemployed she says she will make sure she pays, because she does not want to lose her first home.
