Cape Town - Faeces-flinging ringleaders Loyiso Nkohla and Andile Lili are to be hauled before a party disciplinary committee as soon as they are released from custody, the ANC says.
ANC regional secretary Vuyiso “JJ” Tyhalisisu said on Thursday that charges against the pair had been formulated and would be served as soon as they were granted bail.
He said that apart from bringing the party into disrepute, the pair disobeyed orders from the ANC’s national leadership.
“The national leadership called on them to stop using faeces during their protests, but they ignored this,” Tyhalisisu said.
“As soon as they are out, we will serve the charges. There’s no doubt that action will be taken.”
Nkohla, Lili and seven others are in custody following the dumping of human waste in the departures hall at the Cape Town International Airport last week. They are accused of contravening the Civil Aviation Act.
This came two weeks after Nkohla and Lili led a group of protesters on similar faeces-dumping missions to the provincial legislature and a provincial government building in Greenmarket Square.
Tyhalisisu said the ANC metro region had also written to the party’s provincial executive asking that it suspend Nkohla, a proportional representative councillor, pending the outcome of the disciplinary hearing.
Lili, a former City of Cape Town councillor, was fired last year and expelled from the ANC Youth League.
City Speaker Dirk Smit confirmed on Thursday that Nkohla continued to receive his salary as a councillor.
He said his office had investigated Nkohla’s role in faeces-throwing incidents and the matter had been referred to the city’s disciplinary committee.
“They will schedule hearings and report the findings to council,” Smit said.
“He (Nkohla) can expect anything from a warning to dismissal. Whatever the multiparty disciplinary committee decides will be sent to the local government MEC, who will make a final decision.”
