Govt departments called to clean up it's land

It would cost Cape Town just under R30 million to clear rubble and bush from vacant erven owned by government departments, the chairman of the city's health portfolio committee said on Friday.

Councillor James Vos said he recently inspected sites owned by the national and provincial departments of public works and was "appalled" at their condition.

"I am deeply concerned about the safety of residents as a result of the bushes, and the health risks posed by the dumped waste, rubble and pools of stagnant water," he said in a statement.

He said his committee had resolved that the city's health department should serve final notices on all national and provincial departments instructing them to clean and clear their erven.

The city had the power in law to clear the erven itself, then present the bill to the departments, but there was no guarantee the bill would be paid.

Clearing of national government erven would cost R13.6 million, while the clearing bill for provincial government erven would be R16 million.

"I thus call on the national and provincial departments of public works to fulfil their responsibility and maintain their undeveloped sites across the city," he said.
