Three killed in Cape fire

Three people were killed after a fire broke out in an informal settlement in Cape Town early hours of Sunday morning, the Disaster Risk Management Centre said.

The fire started in Bloekombos, Kraaifontein at around 3am on Sunday, burning the three victims beyond recognition, the Centre said in a statement.

Six shacks were gutted in the fire and three other residents were displaced.

Meanwhile, another fire broke out in Khayelitsha on Sunday, displacing eight people whose shacks were destroyed.

The Centre warned residents not to leave candles or electrical equipment unattended in their homes.

"The Disaster Risk Management Centre is appealing to residents not to leave open flames, candles and lamps unattended, and furthermore to switch off electrical heating equipment before going to bed."
