Dyantyi tackles grievances of backyard dwellers

Hundreds of backyard dwellers from Delft in Cape Town have packed the local civic centre for a meeting with the Western Cape Housing Minister, Richard Dyantyi. He is expected to address the residents on the pending eviction of more than 1 000 dwellers.

The residents illegally occupied housing units in December 2007. The government housing agency, Thubelisha Homes was granted an eviction order last week. Yesterday the lawyers for the dwellers filed papers for leave to appeal the order.

Dyantyi will try to calm the tensions in the area. The eviction order now falls away since the application for leave to appeal. - SABC
