Joe Slovo blaze leaves 250 homeless

Around 90 shacks have been burnt in the fire that swept through the informal settlement

Fire fighters put out the blaze at the Joe Slovo informal settlement near Langa last night

About 90 shacks have been destroyed in a fire that broke out in the Joe Slovo informal settlement near Langa on the Cape Flats last night. The head of Disaster and Risk Management, Greg Pillay, said about 250 people have been left homeless as a result of the fire.

The fire broke out just before sunset near Vangaurd Drive along the N2. Seven water tanks and six fire-engines were immediately dispatched to the scene, assisted by a helicopter that brought the flames under control quickly.

The fire was fanned by the South Easter but because of the quick response by Disaster and Risk Management it was soon brought under control. People in the area who spotted the fire removed their belongings from their shacks and put them on a nearby field.

Pillay says the cause of the fire is not known and no injuries have been reported. He says the homeless people will be accommodated at a local hall and blankets and food will be supplied. - SABC

The most effective way to move someone out of their home.

FIRE. No court eviction notice needed.
