Firefighters battle blazes in the Cape

Firefighters on the Cape Peninsula are battling to control runaway fires that have spread to Scarborough and Kommetjie.

The fires are being fuelled by very strong winds in the area. The fire started earlier yesterday in the mountains near Redhill and Simonstown. By late last night, more than 150 firefighters were still on shift, located at several hot spots.

Four helicopters have been used to water-bomb the affected areas, while ground crews are working non-stop to save houses that are threatened by the fire.

At least 160 residents from the Red Hill informal settlement have been relocated to a community hall in Scotborough as a safety precaution, while firefighters monitored the situation. At this stage there are no reports of injuries or damage to property.

Red Hill was also plagued by fires at the end of January. Runaway fires affected 70 people in Scarborough on January 25, burning six shacks to the ground.

Popular restaurant gutted in George
Meanwhile a popular restaurant and kiddies play park in George has been gutted. Emergency services say the fire at Victoria country heights restaurant broke out at about 8pm last night. Nobody was injured as the restaurant was closed at the time.

The thatch-roofed building, situated next to the N2, was consumed within hours, despite the efforts of the fire brigade. Fire fighters did manage to save the adjacent chocolate factory and bakery. The restaurant was a landmark in George. The cause of the fire is not yet known. - SABC
