‘Poor sanitation hampering Africa’s development’

Minister of Water Affairs and Forestry Lindiwe Hendricks says lack of decent sanitation does not only negatively impact on health, but also hampers development.

Hendricks was speaking in Durban at the second African Conference on Sanitation and Hygiene. More than 40 African countries are represented at the conference.

Hendricks says lack of capacity at municipal level in South Africa has caused setbacks in plans to eradicate the bucket system by 2014.

Hendricks says government must prioritise investment for the provision of clean water and sanitation to reduce illnesses associated with poor hygiene and lack of sanitation. - SABC
