Judge refuses to postpone Delft housing case

Cape High Court Judge, Deon van Zyl, says he will no longer postpone an application to evict more than 1000 residents occupying unfinished houses in Delft illegally. Van Zyl was reacting to a request by the residents' legal counsel, Andrè Coetzee.

Coetzee asked for a postponement to consult his clients and to study an affidavit presented to the court on the extent of damage caused during the occupation.

Van Zyl, however, says he gave the residents and their legal team six weeks to prepare for their case. The residents occupied the homes in Delft last year in December.

The eviction application is spearheaded by the government housing agency, Thubelisha Homes. The application continues in court. - SABC
