Hangberg housing debacle needs concrete solutions - IJR

The Institute for Justice and Reconciliation has said the Hangberg housing debacle will only be resolved if all parties work together.

The IJR has been appointed as mediator between Cape Town officials and local families.

The city has also filed an application in the Western Cape High Court requesting permission to dismantle shacks that have been erected illegally beyond the fire break on the slopes of the Sentinel in Hout Bay.

The police’s attempts to evict some families in September have been condemned by Cosatu and community leaders, who accused law enforcement of being heavy-handed.

But the Institute’s Fanie du Toit said shifting blame would not resolve the issue.

“It’s important that we find a conversation that’s constructive, that’s not politicised, that really carries the interests of people on the ground and look at concrete solutions now.”

Du Toit added that housing issues were not new to the Hout Bay community.

“In the past we’ve been able to see very productive solutions by the larger Hout Bay community and we sincerely hope this time around that could be the case again,” he said.
