Phillipi residents petition over poor living conditions

Residents of a Western Cape township have described their living conditions as dismal.

Representatives from Never-Never and Ekuphumeleni handed over a petition to the Western Cape Legislature on Thursday.

Their complaints centre on the lack of basic services including running water.

“We don’t have toilets, we don’t have electricity,” one woman said. A man added, “We’re living in a disaster – when it is raining we stay in a flood.”

Others called the conditions “unacceptable.”

Legal advisor Claudette Whyte said they were looking into the matter.

"The administrative support has 10 days to conduct a preliminary investigation. Thereafter the petitions are handed to the secretary who, within five working days, refers the petition to the speaker," she added.
