Hangberg housing protest continues to the Hout Bay police station

Some Hangberg residents in Hout Bay in Cape Town are currently protesting the city’s recent attempts to evict them from their homes.

Residents had built shacks between the fire breaks on the slopes of the Sentinel.

Last week police tried to evict them and demolish the shacks, resulting in violent clashes between officials and the residents.

Dozens of residents marched to the Hout Bay police station on Sunday after making placards and posters to protest against the recent violence during evictions.

Residents’ anger is directed at the Democratic Alliance-run city council and Western Cape Premier Helen Zille.

Religious leaders and local opposition parties are at the front of the residents’ march.

Many of the posters had three words emblazoned on them holding Zille accountable for the violence.

Trade union Cosatu organised the protest. The ANC, Pan African Congress and Congress of the People representatives have already addressed residents.

Residents insist their demands for housing is not unreasonable. Many have said they would continue the protest until local councillors give them what they want.
