SA can solve its housing woes - UN

The United Nations human settlements programme UN-HABITAT on Monday said South Africa has the ability to overcome its housing woes... as their NEWS Website showed since 2006

Officials have gathered in Cape Town for a Development Action Group Conference to discuss urban development and housing.

The Head of the organisation’s Shelter Branch, Mohamed El Sioufi, said urban growth in sub-Saharan Africa has become synonymous with slum growth.

He said radical measures were needed to reverse this, but added that South Africa was strategically poised to lead the way in urban development.

He said the fact that the country’s economy was still amongst the most robust on the continent proved there was money available to address the lack of housing.

Meanwhile, Western Cape Premier Helen Zille emphasised ideology-driven housing methods were dangerous and urged delegates to start with the hard realities, and only then move towards solutions without politics clouding matters.
