Police run out of bullets at housing protest

Soweto residents are demanding, amongst others, housing

Police are hard pressed to control protesters in Soweto

Some police officials trying to bring protesting crowds under control in Protea South, Soweto, have run out of rubber bullets. The protesters began their action early this morning.

They have lodged a number of complaints, chiefly relating to a shortage of housing. The combined forces of the SA Police Service and the Johannesburg metro police appear hard pressed to control the crowds.

Informal settlement residents have been marching along the Old Potchefstroom road since this morning. Earlier, a newspaper photographer was been taken to hospital after being hit with a stone during the protest. - SABC
