Boy killed in shack fire

KIMBERLEY – A 10-year-old boy died after a shanty in which he and his mother were sleeping caught fire, Northern Cape police said on Wednesday.

Spokesman Constable Sergio Kock said the mother and boy were sleeping in separate rooms of the shanty in Lerato Park, at Roodepan, when the fire apparently started at 10.45pm on Tuesday.

“It is alleged that the mother could not save the child and he died as a result of severe burns inside the shanty.” The name of the victim could not be released as some next-of-kin still had to be informed. – The Citizen
