Police - protests - burning barricades

A large police contingent has been deployed on the N2 near Cape Town where residents from the Joe Slovo informal settlement have set up burning barricades, the SABC reported on Monday.

They are protesting against their planned relocation from the area to temporary houses at Delft to make way for the N2 Gateway housing project.

The protesters were reportedly throwing stones and a delivery vehicle was also set alight.

A spokesperson for the provincial traffic department described the situation as "tense". He said the road remained closed between Vanguard Drive and Bunga Avenue.

A large contingent of police authorities and ambulance personnel were deployed in the area. - Sapa
