Ratepayers living near the Maitland cemetery have criticised the relocation of an informal settlement to the borders of the cemetery, saying crime has increased in the area.

Brian Smith, a Factreton resident, spoke to the Cape Argus on behalf of concerned ratepayers of the Kensington, Maitland and Factreton areas.

Wellington Nokhenke said he didn't know why people were having a problem with them.

"We're not causing any harm to anyone," he said.

Charles Cooper, media spokesperson for the City of Cape Town, said the city was faced with "a humanitarian crisis" and had to speed up the process of relocating people.

Cooper said all matters had been communicated to the local ratepayers' association and had been "widely advertised".
