Nigerian Housing - Lindiwe's sums to the rescue

President Umar Yar’Adua is expected to declare open a three-day conference on ‘Housing Finance in Nigeria’ organised by Foundation for Development Initiatives (FDI) in collaboration with Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) and UN-HABITAT.

Major issues to be discussed at the event include housing management and finance, infrastructure provision and the overall planning of the urban environment in Nigeria.

"It is envisaged that the brainstorming sessions will lead to government’s identification of the nation’s Housing capacity needs and priorities as a step to improving Nigeria’s housing requirements while taking into consideration the less privileged."

Halima Alao, Minister of Environment, Housing and Urban Development is expected to deliver the keynote address while Lindiwe Sisulu, South Africa’s Minister of Housing, will deliver a special lecture on the topic housing finance in Africa among other eminent Nigerian and International professional experts.

Seminars would also be organised on "Emerging Urban Africa" with special focus on ‘Housing Finance and Housing Production in Nigeria; Secondary Mortgage Institutions; Primary Mortgage Institutions; Federal Government and Social Housing in Nigeria; Access to Housing Finance; Rural Housing; Housing the Poor; Lagos Mega City Project and Abuja Master plan.

FDI, an initiative of Professor Akin Mabogunje was launched in October 2006 by the former President, Olusegun Obasanjo with the aim of tackling certain issues in consonance with the NEEDS agenda for Nigeria’s development. - Business Day Online
